Introduction/Rationale - Message from the York Region Board of Education
A message from the Director, Bill Hogarth

"The adolescent years are both interesting and challenging times for students, taking them through a myriad of emotional, physical and intellectual changes. Students entering adolescence are beginning an exciting new journey of finding their identities and defining their voices. During this process, adolescent learners also face the challenge of moving from elementary to secondary school, asking them to adapt to a new learning and social environment. In York Region, we strive to support adolescent learners during this time of great change. .... Recently as a result of powerful new research on adolescence, we have a better understanding of the changes that adolescent learners experience. This, in conjunction with a results-based approach to school planning, allows us to make better decisions about appropriate programming for students. .... It is the collaborative responsibility of elementary and secondary schools to work together to develop and implement a plan that meets the needs of the unique student population within their community."
